Mentioned for the first time by the Greeks around 500 BC, the Celts distinguished themselves as a people near 1200 BC. They were characterized in particular by their knowledge of metallurgy and agriculture, and settled a large part of Western Europe. Formidable warriors, the first Celts fought naked with their entire body painted in blue. This way they aimed at terrorizing their enemies. Celtic women were also known for their bravery. They participated in the battles, but also in governance and diplomacy sometimes! One of the most remarkable of them was Boudica, a feminine version of Vercingetorix. After the Gallic Wars, which took place from 58 to 51 BC, most of the Celts submitted to Julius Caesar, except in a small part of Great Britain. Firstly adept of polytheism and druidism, the Celts were converted to Christianity under Roman influence. By the end of the Roman Empire, the Celtic culture had disappeared from a large part of Western Europe. However, peoples like the Britons, the Gaels, and the Scots, enabled the Celtic lore and languages to cross the Middle-Ages to the present days.
