Born in 1910 in the Gironde, Jacques-Yves Cousteau has first of all been officer in the French navy before becoming an oceanographic explorer. At the age of 26 he boards the battleship Condorcet while he serves in the army. One year later he gets married to Simone Melchior, together they have two children. During the Occupation he makes many documentaries with his friends from the trio "Mousquemers", dedicated to submarine research. He leaves the army few years after the end of the war and, in 1956, he makes the movie "The Silent World" which is partially filmed under water. Cousteau crosses the world's oceans on board of his boat "La Calypso" and asks his team to wear the famous red bonnet that will characterize him throughout his life. In the 90's he militates with Greenpeace for the Antarctic's protection and has an ocean park built in Paris. During the last years of his life, Cousteau works as a regular adviser for the United Nations and for the World Bank. He dies in 1997 in Paris, aged 87. Finally, the one we call "The Commander Cousteau" or "The Pacha" has not only been one of the inventors of the modern aqualung, but he has also permitted to make oceanography what it is nowadays, creating vocations for many children.
