TREASURE MADNESS - THE END OF THE SAMURIAS

TM takes you to Japan from 17th to 19th century to discover the Edo period! After the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu on his enemy's armies at Sekigahara battle, the capital had been moved from Kyoto to Edo, the present Tokyo. Ieyasu and his descendants took in turn the title of shogun, general, in Japanese. An era of peace began and lasted almost 250 years. The country acquired stable and centralised institutions whereas literacy and arts progressed in all the country. While the shogun got all the powers, the emperor stayed in Kyoto having his role limited to spiritual and symbolic functions. Despite the pacification of Japan, the era had been marked by a policy of isolation named "Sakoku", in particular in answer to the expansion of Christianism. The commercial and cultural exchanges with external world became extremely limited. Virtually no Europeans had been accepted on the territory anymore while none of the Japanese had been authorized to leave the country, at the risk of being sentenced to death. In the middle of 19th century, the American warships arrived off the coasts of Japan and put pressure on the shogun. This one had been forced to accept the western presence and alienated the nobility who blamed him for having yielded to the fear of the strangers without having asked for authorisation from the Emperor. It has been the beginning of the Boshin war that confronted the shogun's troops to the pro-imperial army. The Edo period came to an end in 1868 with the abdication of the shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu which left the power to Emperor Mutsuhito. After that the last samurais disappeared in an ultimate revolt in 1877 and made way for openness to the world and technological modernity.
